Taking advantage of online networking

Dear Colleague,
Taking advantage of
online networking
As a member of the professional services community in London, we hope that your firm will be interested in PM Forum. Please find herewith details of the next event in London. All our events are normally member only, but if your firm has yet to experience a PM Forum event, you may attend as a guest to gain a feel for the association.
The Event Smart partners have always realised the vital importance of networking to meet new contacts and gain insights into trends. Traditionally, this has involved mostly thought leadership to raise profile and events to meet people. The web provides a brand new set of opportunities. Websites, blogs and the paraphernalia of digital marketing mean that any firm can now develop a global presence. Online business networking tools such as LinkedIn and Twitter enable those that enjoy networking to build a personal profile and massive communities of 'friends/followers' at a speed that would have been impossible through traditional routes – networking on steroids.
All of which poses interesting challenges for those responsible for account and client relationship management, including:
- Who should take responsibility?
- Should guidelines be issued to participants?
- How can contributions be made to blogs without confidential data leaking out?
- Is the corporate profile being kept up-to-date?
- Are all the useful contacts emerging from cyber space included on the firm's CRM system?
- How can those who are reluctant networkers and/or technophobes be encouraged to participate in a 'scary place full of spammers and time wasters'.
We do hope you can join us!

Christian Walsh Allen&Overy
Christian is website manager at law firm Allen & Overy, sitting within the firm's global communications group. He has recently drafted A&O's first digital strategy for public-facing communications. Christian trained as a journalist, initially working both online (TheSun.com) and print (The Independent). A number of travel start-ups later, he moved as online editor to a government quango which - awash with taxpayer's money - was an early adopter of everything digital. Not young enough to call himself a true digital native, he is none-the-less enthralled by the impact that new media has had on traditional industries and professions - unleashing challenges and opportunities that can be just as relevant to a law firm as they are to a local council, a travel agent or a media publisher.
