Government Proposals to Release Public Land

The Housing Minister Grant Shapps announced Government plans to release sufficient public land to build as many as 100,000 new homes and support 25,000 new jobs by 2015, a move which has been welcomed by housebuilders and the Treasury.

New PPS3

Following consultation in February, the Government published a revised version of Planning Policy Statement 3 (PPS3) Housing on 9 June 2011 which sets out the Government's national planning policy framework for delivering the Government's housing objectives. A key change is that the definition of affordable housing in Annex B now includes "affordable rented" housing.

Court of Appeal Ruling on CALA Homes


The Court of Appeal ruled that the proposed abolition of Regional Strategies can be considered a 'material consideration' by LPAs and Inspectors when determining planning applications.

New Presumption in Favour of Sustainable Development

The Government announced a new 'presumption in favour of sustainable development' on 15 June 2011 which aims to speed up development whilst ensuring protection for the environment.

Power Given to Communities to Protect Green Spaces

The Government has published its Natural Environment White Paper, outlining its vision for the natural environment over the next 50 years. The Paper identifies a number of policy changes, including strategic Local Nature Partnerships and the new Green Areas Designation.

New Consultation on London-wide CIL

The Mayor's latest proposals for a new London-wide CIL on development in London have been published together with a draft charging schedule and a summary of responses to his previous consultation.
