IAB News

1st July 2009
Hi there,

So the internet has made it through another shock to its system. Unsurprisingly, the death of Michael Jackson was as traumatic for Google and Twitter's servers as it was for the millions of fans worldwide who needed to be kept updated as the drama unfolded. Meanwhile, another – very different – illustration of the importance of the internet has been unfolding in Iran, forcing Gordon Brown to argue that the internet "has changed foreign policy for ever".

The Prime Minister's comments make interesting reading for anyone involved in new media, especially in light of last month's Digital Britain report. Here at the IAB we were pleased to see that the report specifically supported self-regulation to address privacy concerns and welcomed the IAB's Good Practice Principles.

The principles are just one of the ways that we seek to represent the interests of our members and the industry as a whole. Over the coming weeks we'll be unveiling a range of new developments like our new professional services initiative designed to help the IAB's many SME members find relevant advice on key business issues. We'll also be launching a revamped homepage designed to improve your online experience of the IAB.

For a full run down on the key happenings at the IAB over the coming weeks, we've summarised the major points for you in the email below. And just to prove it's not all serious, we're hosting a Twitter networking night so that we can get to know our growing army of Twitter followers a little better. The Meet, Tweet and Greet night takes place on Thursday night. Click here for more info

IAB launches Game Advertising Council

in-game.jpg

The IAB has launched a new Council dedicated to easing adoption of advertising in and around video games. This includes dynamic and static advertising on games consoles as well as advertising in and around online games. The Council is a separate department to the IAB's existing operations and will work with games publishers, providers and agencies to educate marketers and improve trading. If you are interested in this Council, please contact Jack Wallington.

Social media council to produce white paper on measurement

Following the release of the IAB US social media ad metrics definitions, IAB UK is currently putting together its own report on

social media measurement, what you should be doing to ensure your campaigns meet objectives and the tools to get you there. We are currently interviewing industry experts to achieve an industry-wide perspective. If you would like to be involved, contact Amy Kean.

Affiliate Marketing Council to launch Ethical Merchant Charter

Publishers are at the heart of the affiliate model and do a marvelous job as a virtual sales force for the merchants and brands whose programmes they work on. Often sole traders or small firms, publishers are reliant on the commissions earned as their primary income. As such the Affiliate Marketing Council wishes to highlight some basic best practice aimed at ensuring publishers are treated fairly and ethically. These guidelines are due to be ratified in the coming weeks.

REGULATIONS

Digital Britain recognises the role of self-regulation

digital britain.jpg

The Government published its final Digital Britain report on 16th June, its comprehensive overview of the UK digital economy. The report acknowledged targeted/behavioural advertising as a business model to "convert creativity into value" and as "an important revenue earner". The report specifically supports self-regulation to address privacy concerns, placing particular emphasis on transparency and welcomes the IAB's Good Practice Principles as well as the consumer portal www.youronlinechoices.co.uk

Parliamentary inquiry into behavioural advertising and online privacy

The IAB has submitted written evidence to a parliamentary committee looking into internet traffic, including behavioural advertising and online privacy. The IAB's submission makes the case for behavioural advertising as well as recommending that the committee supports ongoing self-regulatory and educational efforts rather than suggesting a new approach. The IAB will be giving oral evidence to the committee on Tuesday 7th July.

RESEARCH

Social media and the customer journey research

The IAB's Research team has been busy setting up social media and customer journey / ROI research projects. Watch out for the results of both later in the year. The team has also been working hard on UKOM. For those of you who haven't heard of UKOM it is the online industry's answer to demands for a common planning tool for online media. Read all about it in on the IAB's website.
