IAB News

14th April 2010

Hi there,

It's a measure of how fast things move in this industry that it's surprising to remember that the landmark IAB/PwC online adspend figures were published just two weeks ago. With the Election looming and the launch of the iPad imminent, there's plenty going on in the wider industry to keep us all occupied.

At the IAB we're always busy developing new initiatives designed to enhance this ever evolving sector. Just today for example, we announced that some of the UK's biggest digital players have reinforced their commitment to consumers' online privacy, receiving an independent certificate of compliance with the IAB's Good Practice Principles in online behavioural advertising. This latest milestone is part of an on-going programme of activity led by the IAB to develop good practice and promote it widely within the sector.

We're also continuing to develop the IAB's educational remit with the launch of our Social Media education programme designed for new starters within the industry. On top of this, the first Digital Talent Roadshow took place in Bournemouth last month, with 140 students gathering to hear expert advice on how best to establish a career in online advertising. Meanwhile, we're committed to developing and expanding our digital training courses and to producing a range of educational literature - such as our latest handbook on mobile consumer behaviour - designed to demistify key areas of the digital sector.

There's plenty to read about in the email below, but as ever, if you have any specific enquiries please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Regards

Guy Phillipson,
Chief Executive, IAB UK

RESEARCH

Work Research 2010 – top 10 agencies and clients
For members wanting the latest insights on the views and perspectives of the top 10 agencies and major clients then the results of the qualitative project run with Work Research are now ready to download from the research section of the website. The results focus on the way that agencies view media owners and the digital world, the way they like to be sold to and the information they value most – essential for the sales teams of media owners.

IAB and AOP research
The IAB and AOP have also been working closely together to produce a set of guidelines to aid the effective implementation of online ad effectiveness surveys – especially those hosted by media owners and run shortly after a users' exposure to an online campaign. The guidelines aim to help media owners, advertisers and research suppliers minimise the disruption to internet users and to maximise the value they can take from the results of such surveys – more details should be available to download from both the IAB and AOP sites by the end of April.

IAB / PwC Online Adspend figures 2009
The online adspend figures for 2009 are now available to download from the IAB website. The figures show that UK online advertising was worth £3.541 billion in 2009, a like for like increase of 4.2% year on year. Online display advertising was valued at £709.3 million in 2009 with pre-roll and post-roll advertising showing an exceptional growth of 140% year on year to £28.3 million for the year.
