Briefing: The Coalition Government and our NHS: financial challenge and structural reform

As the Coalition Government's plans for the NHS take shape, a rather bleak picture begins to emerge. The plans involve a combination of:
- financial challenge, as the Government seeks 'efficiency savings' of around £20 billion
- cultural shift, with 'top-down' plans shelved and decisions devolved to GPs and patients
- structural change: an independent NHS Board and GPs taking commissioner roles
We consider how these changes might impact NHS organisations, partnering frameworks and the independent and voluntary sector, and suggest some measures to address budget cuts and organisational change.
